The Bell Pepper Print E-mail
08 March 2006

THIS small, fine restaurant is the best in Kensington, and one of the best in Johannesburg. It is not surprising that it has been a People's Choice winner on the Eat Out magazine's website. Owner/chef Clifford Correia moved on, but the new owners kept his recipes. These include, among the starters, sweet chilli calamari, as well as a mussel dish – at the moment, fresh mussels steamed in a rich tomato, herb and white wine sauce; among main courses, North African lamb with chilli, ginger, cous-cous and chickpeas, and Scottish salmon, currently served filleted, deboned, grilled and with a light wholegrain mustard sauce; and roast duckling with a honey, lime and oyster sauce.

Vegetarians get potato gnocchi with roast vegetable and tomato sauce, and the berry mille feuille on the dessert menu is spectacular. The restaurant's food has been described by critics as a "cross-cultural combination of flavours" and "an eclectic intermingling of traditional French, European and local" cuisine.
