07/04/2016: Joburg and its partners stage a Freedom Ride cycle event
07 April 2016
The 5th edition of the Freedom Ride will be held on Sunday, 17 April 2016, starting from Nelson Bridge in Braamfontein at 07:30 to Vilakazi Street and back.

The ride hosted with partners, City of Johannesburg and Hollard hopes to build on the spirit of the previous four rides. The route returns to that of the original ride held in February 2014. The route is 35km but there is public transport available for riders who only want to ride 17km.

The ride seeks to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, promote safe cycling in Johannesburg for commuters and recreational riders, and offer residents to explore the city and its new cycle lanes.

There is no charge to ride, but participants should register online or by form and they also have the opportunity to donate to the Bicycle Empowerment Centre currently operating in Orlando, Soweto.

The route winds its way west from Braamfontein through historical areas like Brixton, and Newclare and into Soweto. Spending a short time at the vibrant area around Nelson Mandela’s house in Vilakazi Street, the route continues through Diepkloof, past Soccer City and into Mayfair and returning to the Nelson Mandela Bridge.

This is not a race and cyclists of all ages (including children) are encouraged to ride. Cyclists must wear a helmet and there will be mechanical support and three water points. Past rides have been immensely enjoyed by the residents of Johannesburg.

This is an ideal opportunity to explore the city by bike. More details and registration is available at www.freedomride.co.za. We look forward to exploring more rides in the city.
