11/10/2016: City of Joburg launches the rooftop vegetable garden project
11 October 2016
The City of Johannesburg will launch the rooftop vegetable garden project on Friday, 14 October 2016 at 3 Kortze Street, Hillbrow as part of celebrating the World Food Day.

The project forms part of the City’s Food Resilience Programme and the inner-city renewal projects that seeks to ensure that people have access to sufficient, affordable and nutritious food.

The City is using this project to encourage the urban food resilience programme to tackle food insecurity in the community. It focuses on a range of initiatives – including the development of a commercially viable and productive urban agriculture sector in Johannesburg, supporting localized food production.

The farming method used at 3 Kortze is hydroponic system, a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water without soil. This method provide higher yield from a hydroponics system, and the growing cycle is shorter with better output. It conserves water efficiently and adapt better to climate change.

The project will be launched by Cllr Mpho Phalatse, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg.

Members of the media are invited to the launch to be held as follows:

Date: Friday, 14 October 2016
Time: 10h00 – 12h00
Venue: 3 Kortze Street, Hillbrow - Johannesburg
