02/11/2016: Old Mutual Soweto Marathon’s road closures
02 November 2016
The City of Johannesburg is excited to support this great annual sporting event, Old Mutual Soweto Marathon taking place on Sunday, 06 November 2016.

“Let us take this opportunity to welcome all the athletes and runners, the supporters and spectators to this unique, exciting occasion and to our great City”, says Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg.

“There is a good reason why this race has become known as “the People’s Race” - amongst participants and residents. Not only does it cater for the entire spectrum of the racing fraternity – but the route also takes competitors into the heart of Soweto, a place of great history”, emphasises Cllr Sifumba.

The positive experience of support that athletes receive from residents adds a unique spirit and atmosphere to this race. The Old Mutual Soweto Marathon is also a social and cultural celebration for both the participants and the hundreds of spectators.

The route will take participants past some of the most esteemed sites such as Vilakazi Street, Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication, Hector Pieterson Museum, Morris Isaacson High School and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Road closures will be effected on Sunday, 06 November 2016 between 05:00 and 18:00 at the following points:

•Soweto Highway and Golden Highway
•Soweto Highway and League Avenue
•Booysens Reserve and League Avenue
•Rand Show Road turn off from N1

“The City of Johannesburg would like to acknowledge the organisers and the sponsors who have contributed greatly to the success of this annual event. We have no doubt that the thousands of runners and spectators who form part of this year event will share in an unforgettable experience”, says Cllr Sifumba.
