24/02/2017: JMPD K9 Unit officer shot by hijackers: Mobile phones worth R60 million recovered
24 February 2017
A 28 year old JMPD K9 Unit officer was shot by hijackers yesterday, 23 February.

Officers from the JMPD K9 Unit received information that two trucks transporting mobile phones worth R60 million were hijacked by about 15 suspects on the N3 near the Buccleuch interchange just after 09:00 yesterday morning.

Two officers followed vehicle tracking signals to a cemetery near the Marlboro off-ramp in Alexandra and found four suspects. Upon searching these suspects, the two officers were ambushed by more suspects and a shootout ensued.

One of the officers was shot in the chest by one of the suspects and despite these dire circumstances, the other officer still managed to take charge of the situation and arrested two suspects. The stolen mobile phones were also recovered.

The injured officer was airlifted by a SAPS helicopter and taken to the Milpark Hospital where he is receiving treatment and remains stable.

I commend the bravery of our JMPD K9 officers in their efforts to protect the residents and the businesses in Joburg, even if it means putting their own lives at risk.

I wish the injured JMPD officer a speedy recovery and thank these two officers for their selfless acts of bravery which ensured that yet another criminal syndicate in Joburg is brought to its knees.
