07/03/2017: JMPD K9 patrol leads to arrest of drug dealers in Rosettenville
07 March 2017
On Friday, 3 March, I accompanied officers from the JMPD K9 Unit to a known drug hotspot in Verona Street, Rosettenville.

The officers and I noticed that the shopkeepers of a small shop that sold live chicken, frozen fish and other foods were uncomfortable with our presence which led to us entering the shop. The officers asked the shopkeeper if they could look around and were given permission to do so.

We searched the shop and discovered rocks of Kat (an illicit drug) in a bag of mealie meal and packs of small zip-lock plastic bags used to package the drugs.

During the search I noticed a CCTV camera in the corner of the ceiling, and upon asking why the shop is under CCTV surveillance, I was informed by one of the suspects that his “boss” is next door. We proceeded to the adjacent shop and discovered that the men next door were observing everything taking place within the shop on a monitor screen. These men denied any connection to the shop next door, but could not explain why they were monitoring the adjacent shop.

Three male suspects were arrested and taken to the Moffatview Police Station where they were charged with possession and dealing of drugs.

We will continue the fight against drugs to ensure our residents are kept safe.
