Early festive season cheer at Slovoville Print E-mail

Business gives food parcels to the Slovoville community.

Parents of pupils at Bottom Primary School in the impoverished settlement of Slovoville, near Lenasia, were besides themselves with joy on Tuesday after the City of Joburg’s Community Development unit facilitated their receipt of fabulous early festive season goodies.

It has become tradition at the school that at this time of the year parents of Grade 7 pupils – learners who will be proceeding to secondary school the following year - are given goodies in the form of food hampers that will make the children remember their stay at Bottom Primary.

This year’s food parcels were donated by the Horizon Educational Trust. The Trust’s Secretary-General, Mustafa Eroglu, said every year his organisation liaised with the City of Joburg with the aim of identifying schools that needed to be cheered up “during this time of the year”.

“It is our way of showing that we care, and also to assure the teachers and parents in these needy communities that they are important in the overall development of our country. It is our way of saying ‘thank you for a job well-done’,” said Eroglu.

Local councillor Busi Radebe appealed to parents to come forward and play an active role in the education and development of their children. “It is important that we continue to work together for the good of the children,” she said.
