A festive treat for vulnerable children Print E-mail

Thousands of vulnerable children had a time of their lives at the weekend when they were given an early festive season treat by Johannesburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau at Delta Park in Blairgowrie, north of Johannesburg.

The “Every Child Birthday Event”, organised by the city’s Health and Social Development Department, was aimed at “putting a smile on the faces of these vulnerable children at this time goodwill and giving”. The children came from orphanages and foster homes from all the city’s seven regions.

This is the sixth year that the city has hosted vulnerable children in this way. The Director for Social Development Director Wandile Zwane, said a festive season treat is a luxury their families cannot afford. “As a result, they feel discriminated against and envy their peers, who have parents who can shower them with birthday parties year after year,” said Zwane.

The Executive Mayor Mpho Parks Tau hosted the vulnerable children and encouraged them to make education their main priority so they could have a better future. He said the city is committed to improving the lives of vulnerable children and to see them forgetting their misery.
