The ninth Joburg Carnival, takes place on December 31, 2012, with the theme: “Jozi lights up GDS 2040.”

The annual biggest, loudest and most entertaining event will see Joburgers through to 2013 on a celebration; with the City hosting the count-down concert at Mary Fitzgerald Square, where the residents will welcome the New Year and celebrate diversity.

Johannesburg residents can expect a flamboyant and electrifying spectacle when the city’s streets come alive with colorful and unique large costumes and floats, gigantic puppets and stilt walkers, music, dance, drama and poetry.

“Every year the Joburg Carnival gets bigger and better, and we expect nothing less for the 2012 party,” said MMC for Community Development, Councillor Chris Vondo.

The carnival is organized by the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department and it features groups from all seven regions of the City.

Setting the mood right for the Orange Afcon Cup hosted by South Africa from 19 January to 10 February 2013, is an ideal vehicle to initiate all to the highly anticipated event.

Efforts to promote the event will already be underway on the evening of the event. A special Orange Afcon Cup float will be paraded as a way of welcoming all the countries that will be taking part in the tournament.
