PIKITUP is the City's official waste management service provider and as such it is responsible for keeping the city clean and preserving an attractive and hygienic environment for residents and visitors.
Pikitup services the entire 1 625km² that is Johannesburg, collecting and disposing of 1,4 million tons of domestic waste generated by the city's 3,2 million citizens every year.
It also offers commercial services to some 17 000 businesses in the city.
The utility cleans and sweeps approximately 9 000 kilometres of
streets within Joburg's seven regions. Littering alone costs Johannesburg R74-million a year while illegal dumping costs another R80-million.
The company owns 12 waste management depots strategically located throughout the city, 33 garden refuse sites, four landfill sites and one incinerator. All its landfill sites comply with permit requirements and are licensed by the national Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.

The new Integrated Waste Management Policy and the National Waste Management Strategy seek to minimise the waste stream going to landfills, while extracting maximum value from the waste stream at all stages of collection and disposal.

Look after your Pikitup Bins
All 240-litre wheeled bins used in the city belong to Pikitup. If you move home or business, your bin must remain at the existing property.
Replacement of a damaged 240-litre bin is R320, once off. The replacement cost only applies if customer negligence in handling the bin can be proven. In such cases the bin will be replaced at the cost to the customer. There is no charge for the replacement of stolen bins. However, customers are required to present an affidavit and a South African Police Service case number to Pikitup before a bin can be replaced. For more information please check the Pikitup website.
Pikitup introduces online statements for commercial clients
Pikitup now offers online statements directly on its website for its commercial clients. Electronic statements are available on the Pikitup website from the 5th of each month, compared to printed statements which are only mailed to customers around the 8th of each month. However, payments cannot be made via the website, and must be effected as normal by debit order, at Pay Points at the Pikitup head office, at the Southdale, Midrand and Marlboro regional offices, at council Pay Points in all the regions, by internet banking, at Easy Pay facilities at Pick ‘n Pay and Shoprite Checkers, and at the Post Office.
