WEEK 7: 19 - 23 SEPTEMBER
WITH global warming a new buzzword, there can be little doubt that the environment theme will be an important one in GDS 2040, one that will grow in prominence in the years to come. The theme will be tackled in the week of 19 to 23 September.
Climate change is one of the major challenges to be taken into consideration. Scientific evidence points to the fact that it will only get worse. Shifting to a low carbon economy means more than just becoming energy efficient; it also means producing goods and services that are not resource intensive.
Joburg is likely to become hotter and wetter, leading to an increased risk of flash floods. The city's poor will be the worst affected, and the related risks of flooding in urban slums will increase.
The focus on climate change and the environment comes with considerations of how to mitigate the damage that has already been done, and how to adapt individual and collective behaviour. Key stakeholders in the environmental field will be called on during the themed focus week to add their input and propose possible solutions to the problems the city faces.
