Programmes and projects

Johannesburg Zoo embarked on an extensive redevelopment programme in 2004-05. Its rebuilding was undertaken to create an adventure experience around the theme “explore our wild places”.

The first project began with the Heart of Africa and included the Ape House expansion and the Forest Floor. The Carnivore Curve Complex and elephant enclosure were upgraded in the Southern Safari zone. Both of these upgrades dealt with animal welfare considerations and operational aspects.

So far, seven new exhibits have been created, including a walk-in aviary, an ape house and new baboon area, a reptile house, and new beer, puma and tiger enclosures.

At present the Temple of Snakes exhibit is being built and, depending on funding, the next project will entail building a look-out tower.

Once complete, the zoo will consist of seven zones - the Heart of Africa, the Spice Route, the Southern Safari, Extreme Environments, Amazonia, an entertainment and retail zone and a revamped animal farm.
