The Fordsburg & Mayfair Urban Development Framework
 
The Inner City has been of strategic importance for the City over the decades. Mayfair/Fordsburg forms part of the Johannesburg Inner City, the most strategic development node within the City. 
 
The City seeks a coherent and nuanced spatial framework to guide development in Mayfair/Fordsburg, based on a sound understanding of the role and function of the area.
 
The primary purpose of the project is the formulation of an Urban Development Framework (UDF) which will consists of:
  • A spatial plan with structuring elements to guide spatial, socio economic, infrastructural and development proposals; 
  • Land Use guidelines detailing the desirable range and mix of land uses and development controls, including design guidelines; and 
  • An implementation strategy identifying critical capital investment projects
    A sound understanding of the current state of the area and the City’s development objectives are required to formulate proposals that area appropriate to guide development of the area

The draft Fordsburg and Mayfair Urban Development Framework, August 2016 has been submitted for comment. Please find attached the link to the report for your consideration and kindly forward the Development Planning Department your written comments on or before the 16 September 2016. FINALISATION OF THE FORDSBURG AND MAYFAIR URBAN DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK

The Department of Development Planning, together with the Johannesburg Development Agency, has been in the process of formulating a new Urban Development Framework for the areas of Mayfair and Fordsburg since 2016. The City seeks a coherent and nuanced spatial development framework to guide development in the area, based on a sound understanding of its current and future role and function.

Following a series of public engagements with affected stakeholders and the City’s own internal Departments and Entities, the Final Draft Urban Development Framework has been completed by the project team in June 2017. The document can be perused as follows:

1. The document is available at the Mayfair Library (11 Central Avenue, Mayfair) for viewing on request from the librarian from Monday - Thursday: 9am to 5pm and Friday & Saturday: 9am to 1pm.

2. By following the attached link to the full report and its supporting annexures.

3. The document and its annexures will be available for viewing at the Grosvenor Recreational Centre (46 Battery Street, Mayfair) on the 10th and 11th July 2017, from 2-7pm.

You are invited to submit written comments on the final draft document until 31st July 2017. Please forward your comments to the project leader, Mohini Chanderalall via e-mail or hand delivered to her office.

A final public engagement round will be held on the Monday, 10th and Tuesday, 11th July 2017 at the Grosvenor Recreational Centre (46 Battery Street). A presentation that summarises the main proposals will be held on Monday, 10th July at 6-7 pm. Members of the project team will be available in an open forum on the 10th and 11th July 2017 from 2-7pm at the centre to discuss the Urban Development Framework and what it means for future development in the area.
