Conducting high quality policy-oriented research

THE main responsibility of the economic research unit is to conduct high quality policy-oriented research and provide evidence-based economic policy advice to enable the City to achieve its broad mandate of significantly transforming and growing the economy to nine percent per annum by 2014.

In essence the unit is the economic policy think-tank of the City. To this end, the unit provides international, national, provincial and local economic developments and trend analyses that may have economic implications on the City's mandate.

By providing and regularly updating the economic profile and socio-economic status of the residents of the City, the unit assists in the development, formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the economic strategy of the City in the context of the National Policy Framework and Provincial Growth and Development Strategy to ensure shared growth, reduced unemployment and poverty.
