 Jorisson Place is home to the economic development department

THE unit has three key functional areas, which are policy development, programme integration and economic regulations.

Policy Development Sub-Unit
This function entails the following:

  • Development and recommendation of policies and strategies for the Department and Municipal Owned Entities
  • Reviewing, as and when necessary and required, the Department and Municipal Owned Entities policies and strategies
  • Cascading national and provincial governments' economic policies to the City level
  • Serve as the repository of the Department and Municipal Owned Entities policies
  • Establishment and maintaining of networks and links with key stakeholders in the research and policy-making arena such as research institutes, universities, economic consultancy firms and other government departments

Program Integration Sub-Unit
This function entails the following:

  • Ensuring the implementation of approved policies and strategies so that the Department's policies are in line with the City's strategic objectives
  • Ensuring the alignment, where necessary and practically possible, of the Department's policies with those of other Units within the City, national and provincial governments
  • Benchmarking the effectiveness of certain Departmental programs against similar ones elsewhere in the country and internationally
  • Provide advise to other Units within the Department on the implementation of certain programs
  • Management of inter-governmental relations

Economic Regulations Sub-Unit
This function entails the following:

  • Determining the regulatory cost of doing business within the City of Johannesburg
  • Research and recommend the review of certain inhibiting laws and regulations
  • Cascading national and provincial governments' laws and regulations to the City level
  • Analyse, in conjunction and collaboration with the Economic Analysis Unit, the economic impact of certain national and provincial governments' laws and regulations on the City
  • Ensuring compliance with the City's by-laws from an economic development perspective
