Sectoral ShareAS the City shifts to a diversified manufacturing and services economy, so the opportunities for foreign direct investment increase. Joburg’s Department of Economic Development has identified key sectors, with its Sector Development Programme focused on strengthening the competitiveness of the sectors, including support initiatives.

  • Tourism (business, sporting, medical, cross-border trade)

The City of Joburg is divided into seven regions, each enjoying differing levels of sector involvement. The regional map highlights some of the key economic precincts in each region. 

The graphic on the right shows the financial and business services sectors dominating the Joburg economy, followed by retail and wholesale trade, community and social services, and manufacturing. Percentages refer to the percentage that a sector or industry contributes to the City's Gross Geographic Product (GGP).
