08/02/2017: Workers approve reintegration of Municipal Owned Entities
08 February 2017
I am delighted by workers’ choice to support the Council’s recent decision to reintegrate Municipal Owned Entities (MOEs) such as City Power, Joburg Water and Pikitup back into the City.

This reintegration process is a victory for workers and residents alike.

Yesterday’s support by workers [statement attached] –

• demonstrates their support for a service delivery model which will improve service quality and accountability;
• supports our fight against corruption; and
• flies in the face of statements made by union officials claiming to embody the voice of the workers.

As the City of Johannesburg, we are sensitive to the concerns of those employed by entities subject to this process. During the reintegration, we are committed to maintaining no job losses for ordinary workers.

We seek to only bring the existing workforce and management into the City structures so as to enhance services throughout Johannesburg.

As the City, we are committed to working alongside workers to make this City great again. Today’s comments by workers indicate that these opportunities do indeed exist.

The reintegration of MOEs will ensure that we -

• fast tracking service delivery within the City;
• creating greater efficiency within the City and improving the quality of services provided by the City;
• achieving substantial financial savings for the City and ensuring taxpayer’s money is effectively used for the benefit of residents over ineffectual boards; and
• directly employing staff within the City.

As we begin the 18 month process of reintegrating entities back into the City, I look forward to continued public engagements with workers and residents alike.

Cllr Herman Mashaba
Executive Mayor
