14/03/2017: Mayor Mashaba to unveil plans to tackle Joburg traffic light challenges
14 March 2017
Tomorrow, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba and the MMC for Transport, Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba, will unveil plans to tackle Joburg traffic light challenges.

Following the Executive Mayor’s announcement of the City’s 2016/17 Adjustment Budget, the Johannesburg Roads Agency received additional funding towards addressing road and related infrastructure backlogs.

The decades-long neglect of infrastructure maintenance means there is still a huge mountain to climb to effectively address our City’s ageing roads and traffic light challenges.

With the allocated funds, the JRA will be able to effectively diminish the frustration of road users and minismise the economic impact caused by traffic congestion. The City is aware of the impact of faulty traffic lights on the flow of traffic and resultant impact on economic productivity, especially during peak hours.

The aim of the City is to reduce congestion and stimulate economic growth by picking up traffic signal faults earlier and improving our response and repair times. To this end, the JRA and the City’s Transport Department will be launching mechanisms to deal with traffic light problems at key intersections in the City.

The event will kick-start with a media briefing where both the JRA and Transport Department will reveal interventions to tackle traffic signal downtime in the City. The media briefing will take place in the JRA Head Office building.

The media briefing will be followed by an oversight visit at the intersection of Miriam Makeba Street and Rahima Moosa Street (formerly Jeppe Street), where both the Executive Mayor and MMC of Transport will officially kick-start the project.

The media briefing will take place as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 15 March 2017
Venue: Johannesburg Road Agency Head Office,
South Wing Boardroom, 3rd Floor
66 Pixely Seme Street (formerly Sauer Street), Johannesburg
Time: 09:30 for 10:00

Members of the media are invited to RSVP via https://goo.gl/4gwGo9 by end of day, 14 March 2017.

There will be photo and interview opportunities.
