City of Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba will join more than 50 000 people who will be taking part in the 17th edition of the MTN Walk the Talk with 702.

Other members of the City’s top leadership are also expected to participate in the popular event, which will take place on Sunday July 23. Entries for this year’s walk are officially open. With a new headline sponsor, leading African cellphone network MTN, this year's event promises to be even bigger and better.

Walking in the various categories will start and finish at Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia in the City’s Region B.

Speaking during an interview on Redi Tlhabi's afternoon drive show on Radio 702 recently, MMC Sifumba said she was looking forward to taking part in this year's event, during which participants will again walk for a good cause.

Cllr Sifumba, who will take part in the 5km walk, said the event not only brought residents together but it also provided an opportunity for people to see the beauty of Johannesburg.

“The MTN Walk the Talk with 702 can only spell social cohesion. It also promotes a healthy lifestyle and encourages participants to take better care of their health,” said Cllr Sifumba.

She added that the City was proud to be a part of “such a great event”.

Several City entities have been roped in to provide critical services to ensure the success of the event. “JMPD (Johannesburg Metro Police Department) will ensure the safety of the walkers and JRA (Johannesburg Roads Agency) will safely close off all the routes that the walkers will be using and make sure there is minimal disruption to motorists,” said MMC Sifumba.

She said Emergency Management Services (EMS) officers would be on standby to attend to any medical emergencies.

The other City entities that will lend their support are waste management company Pikitup, Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo, electricity utility City Power and Joburg Water.

“We have to make this event a success for all those involved,” said Cllr Sifumba.
