Jozi to host NBA All Africa Games Print E-mail

In a significant sporting coup, the City of Johannesburg is to host this year’s NBA All Africa Games at the Ticketpro Dome in Randburg on Saturday August 5.

The move, which follows the signing recently of a service level agreement by both the City of Joburg’s Economic Development Department and the National Basketball Association Africa, will help position the city not only as a great host of mega lifestyle events but also have an economic impact through partnerships.

Joburg Tourism Project Manager Lumka Dlomo says this year’s Games feature prominently on the Johannesburg tourism and sporting calendar.

“They will position Johannesburg not only as the destination of choice for business and leisure tourism, but also as a leader in sporting, lifestyle, shopping and entertainment offerings. This sets the benchmark for other cities and provinces to adapt the model,” says Dlomo.

She says the Games will also showcase the city’s world-class facilities and help attract local, national and international visitors to Johannesburg and contribute to the local economy through tourism.

The Games will once again feature Team Africa and Team World and will be played in support of the United Nations’ Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Nelson Mandela Foundation and SOS Children's Villages South Africa.

Team Africa will comprise second-generation African players, while Team World will be made up of players from several countries across the rest of the globe.

Associate events include a fan zone at Rosebank Ball, a golf day at Steyn City and the NBA Business Summit at The Venue at Melrose Arch.

The first NBA All Africa Games took place at the Ellis Park Arena in August 2015.
