Dancing on to Soweto stage
31 May 2011

The Dance Umbrella will add the Soweto Theatre to its list of venues for its next festival, bringing contemporary dance to the township’s cultural heart.

FOR the first time in its history, Dance Umbrella, one of Joburg’s most popular arts events, is heading to Soweto.

The dance showcase, which takes place at various venues in Johannesburg each year, will be held at the Soweto Theatre from 17 February to 4 March 2012, an event billed to attract a lot of attention from contemporary dance enthusiasts in the township.

Dance Umbrella’s artistic director, Georgina Thomson, said hosting the show in Soweto would enable people to understand contemporary dance.

“The Soweto Theatre is a closer and convenient space that will enable people who cannot drive into the inner city to watch our shows to see what is happening in the art scene,” she added.

The theatre is being built, and is expected to be completed in November. It is located within a zone of public space known as the “cultural heart” of Soweto. It includes the existing Jabulani Amphitheatre.

Once finished, the theatre will have three performing venues of various sizes, capable of seating 90, 180 and 420 people, respectively. It will bring arts and culture facilities to Sowetans.

Entries to participate in Dance Umbrella are open; application forms can be downloaded from the Dance Forum website. It will feature only commissioned work and international companies and collaborations on the main programme.

On the Stepping Stones programme, there will be other entries, including community, youth, young artists and, hopefully, innovative concepts on all levels. It is also possible to apply for a commissioning fee of R30 000.

Other venues that will host Dance Umbrella are the Market Theatre, the Dance Factory, Goethe on Main and the University of Johannesburg Arts Centre.
