Health and Social Development Department

The Department of Health contributes to the provision of primary healthcare to residents of the city. It also ensures the availability of safe, quality medication.

Partnerships
It works closely with national and provincial health departments to put into effect national campaigns.

Other partners in its quest to ensure the wellbeing of citizens are non-governmental organisations and other bodies to ensure improved access, skills transfer and improved quality of care.

Regional Health Services

Seven regional implementation units, demarcated according to the regions of the city, are responsible for managing the clinics under the city's jurisdiction, and delivering primary and environmental health services.

THE Department of Health and Social Development contributes to the provision of primary well-being of Joburg's residents.

The health arm looks to the healthcare to residents and also ensures the availability of safe, quality medication. It runs local clinics, provides education programmes and workshops, supports other healthcare bodies and monitors residents' health.

The social development side provides development and welfare services, including the expanded social package - Siyasizana - that provides support for the poorest residents as well as the Migrants' Helpdesk to assist new arrivals to the city.

Health

Based at the Metro Centre in Braamfontein, the health department has a central unit that is responsible for planning, monitoring and evaluating, reporting, norms and service level standards, and policy, procedure and guideline development.

Seven units, in each of Joburg's regions, are responsible for managing the City's clinics, delivering primary and environmental health services.

The department runs 96 clinics, including mobile units, which are visited by about 3 000 000 people annually.
