Hercules” and team keep pros in shape

The physio department is one of the most critical elements of any professional golf tournament.

At this week’s Joburg Open a team of four therapists work in shifts starting an hour before play and usually ending at 6pm. They arrive three days before the start of the tournament where they assess the players requiring treatment, and then it’s time to get down to business.

“We make sure they’re activating the right muscles for their golf swing and doing the correct stretches, and we also work on deep tissue massage and so on,” says physio Esmari Hofmeyr, who is nicknamed “Hercules” by the pros for the pain she sometimes has to inflict on them.

“We do a bit of psychology work as well to convince a player he can play, and not to let them feel there’s a major problem.”

Backs and necks are obviously the main focus areas.

“The young players are great because they’ll come just to learn what they need to do to get better,” says chiropractor Jason Fyfer.

“Often the players come in just to chat, or they know what they need to do and just get straight down to work themselves before we treat them. We’re like a family here.”
