JOHANNESBURG TO HOST SADC CONFERENCE ON MIGRATION
Cross-border migration between South African and other Southern African Development Community (SADC) cities will be in the spotlight at a workshop hosted by the City of Johannesburg next week in partnership with the Southern Africa Migration Project, the South African Cities Network and the Municipal Development Partnership for Eastern & Southern Africa.

Cross-border and internal migration is reshaping the economies and social structures of southern Africa's towns and cities. The migration flows pose considerable challenges to governments and administrations in a wide range of areas such as housing, social services and health care.

The workshop will bring together policy-makers, city managers and researchers to share experiences and discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by migration. The intention of the workshop is to reach a better understanding of the dynamics of migration in southern Africa and to influence urban governance policy and actions.

Dr Jonathan Crush, director of the Southern African Migration Project (SAMP) says many of these challenges are common to all cities. "The sharing of experiences and best practices can help us to ensure that migration enhances rather than undermines social and economic development," he says.

SAMP has recently completed a multi-city survey on the migration experiences of nine cities in the SADC region - Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Gaborone, Harare, Lusaka, Maputo, Maseru and Windhoek. These studies will provide the starting point for discussions of governance, management and service delivery issues posed by migration.

The workshop will take place from 21 to 23 August at the Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein.
