Unity Through Sport

In honour of the late Oliver Tambo, the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Gauteng initiated the SALGA Gauteng Inter-Municipal Games as part of the commemoration of one of the stalwarts of South Africa's liberation struggle.

This year's OR Tambo Intermunicipal Games which embrace the theme unity through sport, will be hosted by Clr Duma Nkosi, Chairperson of SALGA Gauteng and the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Clr Amos Masondo. The games take place on 19 October 2007 in Johannesburg at Marks Park Sports Club.

Fourteen municipalities within Gauteng Province will gather to foster sound intermunicipal relations and encourage a culture of healthy living as they participate in eighteen sporting codes including cycling, darts, golf, morabaraba, soccer, pool, volleyball.

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Cllr Amos Mosondo said "The honourable comrade Tambo in 1990 said, and I quote him verbatim ‘It is our responsibility to break down barriers of division and create a country where there will be neither whites nor black, just South Africans, free and united in diversity'.

"It is in this spirit that we as the City of Johannesburg are committed to this and other causes that encourage interrelationship between our communities. We further want to foster a culture of healthy living and are encouraging people to participate in sports to keep healthy." Municipal employees who will be participating in the games were chosen following selections that took place during municipal employee games in various municipalities. All of this is underpinned by the theme of Unity through Sport.
