​City gear-up for World Aids Day


 

World AIDS Day is observed Internationally annually on the 1st of December, as part of its commemorations, the City of Johannesburg will embark on different activities as a build up toward it.

 
The City Of Johannesburg will conduct HIV and AIDS Awareness Campaign from 26 November until 1 December 2007 in line with Gauteng HIV and AIDS Strategy.

 
About 3 300 volunteers will participate in the door-to-door community awareness campaign. At the workplace, a total of 400 peer educators will participate in the conducting of office-to-office education.

 
Education will cover the importance of testing for HIV and increase the level of HIV and AIDS awareness and understanding in the community and at the workplace. It will also highlight social issues fuelling the HIV epidemic: poverty, gender imbalances, substance abuse, sexual abuse and to promote available services in the community and at workplace in the support for people infected and affected by the epidemic.

 
The City Of Johannesburg major events:

 
On 26 November 2007, the City will launch a Citywide door-to-door awareness campaign at Diepsloot Extension 1 from 10am to 12pm.
On 27 November 2007, City team will conduct support visit to a Hospice Centre in Region F.
On 28 November 2007, the City will host a Candlelight Memorial event at Metro Centre, Reception Area.
On 30 November 2007, the city will host “EVERY CHILD'S BIRTHDAY” targeting 700 orphans and vulnerable.
Nelson Mandela 46664 Concert will be held on 01 December 2007 at Ellis Park Stadium.
The activities plan was presented on the Johannesburg AIDS Council (JAC) meeting that was held on Tuesday, 13 November 2007, which is chaired by Executive Mayor Councilor Amos Masondo.

 
The door-to-door in the community and office-to-office education at the City Of Johannesburg's workplace will start from 26 – 30 November 2007. This method is seen to be more effective in ultimately changing sexual practices that lead to acquisition and transmission of HIV and STI's.

 
During this period, all communities are encouraged to participate in this programme by allowing volunteers into their homes, volunteers will be identifiable.
