City gear-up for World Aids Day

World AIDS Day is observed Internationally annually on the 1st of December, as part of its commemorations, the City of Johannesburg will embark on different activities as a build up.

The City Of Johannesburg will conduct HIV and AIDS Awareness Campaign from 26th November until 1st December 2007 in line with Gauteng HIV and AIDS Strategy.

About 3 300 volunteers will participate in the door-to-door community awareness campaign. At the workplace, a total of 400 peer educators will participate in the conducting of office-to-office education.

Education will cover the importance of testing for HIV and increase the level of HIV and AIDS awareness and understanding in the community and at the workplace. It will also highlight social issues fuelling the HIV epidemic: poverty, gender imbalances, substance abuse, and sexual abuse. The campaign also seek to promote available services in the community, community health centres and at workplace in the support for people infected and affected by the epidemic.

The City Of Johannesburg's HIV and AIDS awareness programme include the following events:

On 26 November 2007, the City will launch a Citywide door-to-door awareness campaign at Diepsloot Extension 1 from 10am to 12pm
On 27 November 2007, support visit to a Hospice Centre will be conducted in Region F (The Inner City).
On 28 November 2007, a Candlelight Memorial event, targeted at the City of Johannesburg employees, will be held at Metro Centre, Reception Area in Braamfontein.
On 30 November 2007, the City will host "EVERY CHILD'S BIRTHDAY" targeting 700 orphans and vulnerable children at Little Falls in Roodepoort.
Nelson Mandela 46664 Concert will be held on 01 December 2007 at Ellis Park Stadium.
The door-to-door in the community and office-to-office education at the City Of Johannesburg's workplace will start from 26 - 30 November 2007. The City is confident that these will go a long way in ultimately changing sexual practices that lead to acquisition and transmission of HIV and STI's.

During this period, all communities are encouraged to participate in the campaign by allowing identifiable volunteers into their homes.
