Report from the Metro Bus Board

Report from the Metro Bus Board
The City of Johannesburg has received a report from the Metro Bus Board that the services of the Metro Bus Managing Director (MD) Mr Bheki Shongwe are being terminated with immediate effect.

The bus company's Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Mr Johannes Jacobus Wannenburg will be the Acting MD until a new appointment is made.

Mr Shongwe's contract with the Metro Bus ended in February 2007 but negotiations to possibly renew his contract between him and the Metrobus Board could not be concluded in time.

During the recent strike at Metro Bus which ended three weeks ago, a mutual arrangement was made to engage Mr Shongwe's services on a month-to-month contract basis. At the end of the strike, the Board decided not to extend his contract any further.

The Metro Bus Board explained that the termination of Mr Shongwe's contract is not linked to the strike and his contribution to the company has been valuable.

Confirming this contribution, City Manager Mr Mavela Dlamini said: "We would like to thank Mr Shongwe for his services during a challenging time at Metro Bus and wish him well in his future endeavours," said City Manager Mavela Dlamini.

"As the company positions itself as one of the key role players in the City plans to improve the use of public transport in the period leading to the 2010 Soccer World Cup and beyond, the contribution made by Mr Shongwe would assist the new incumbent to re-focus Metro Bus," added Dlamini.

Ends.
