A "ball" of a day in celebartion of Africa Day
The City of Joburg's Community Development Directorate is hosting a one-day sport as part of the Africa Day celebrations at Wembley Indoor Stadium on Saturday 26 May 2007.
The entire day will be devoted to playing football, basketball and handball on a knockout basis for both males and females. Groups from afar as Somalia, Nigeria, Congo as well as neighbouring countries will provide entertainment.
"Dubbed, Africa Day Ubuntu Sport the event is among many initiatives aimed at rooting out xenophobia amongst the City's diverse communities", says Mrs Pilisiwe Twala-Tau, Executive Director for Community Development.
She says " It is really an opportunity for all of us to embrace Africa Day because we can live, work and play together as Africans irrespective of our different cultures".
"Sport has proved to be a powerful medium" that can unite diverse people and assist in overcoming poverty, social intolerances and crime said Twala-Tau.
One of the objectives of the Department is to unite the diverse communities through sport and recreation. In April 2007, the City established a Migrants Helpdesk within the Inner City as a way of further socially integrating and availing assistance to other nationals coming to Joburg.
