Joburg municipal services not affected by strike

Johannesburg's municipal services will not be affected should the intended strike in the public sector takes place, says the Municipal Manager, Mr Mavela A.V. Dlamini.

Municipal workers are not part of the current negotiations and bargaining between the government and public sector unions. Unions such as SAMWU and IMATU representing local government workers function within a separate bargaining chamber from workers in the national or provincial administrations.

Mr Dlamini says he expects key city services such as refuse removal, water and electricity maintenance, emergency services, clinics, libraries, and the JMPD to continue as normal. In some instances, clinics operated by the city can expect a high demand for service if provincial and national facilities not coping. Administrative personnel and staff at call centres and city offices will also be working as usual. In the meantime, the City is expected to implement its new financial year's (July 2007) agreement concluded last year with the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) and Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) within the next few weeks.
