Metrobus voted Best Bus Company

The Johannesburg City is thrilled that its own bus company, MetroBus, has been voted the Best in The Star's annual Your Choice Awards.

The City's Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, Ms Rehana Moosajee, said: "We are humbled by this acknowledgement from The Star readers and Johannesburg residents. This accolade will go a long way in motivating all at MetroBus to continue to strive to serve our commuters with distinction. We can't be complacent and have to put an extra effort to do more to please our customers."

Considering that MetroBus was in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past few months, commuters who participated in the poll were probably showing recognition to improvements in service delivery initiated by Metrobus in the past year.

This included the introduction of 128 new buses introduced on the city's bus routes which are part of the Road to 2010 Soccer World Cup and Beyond initiative. Six of these buses are specially adapted to transport disabled passengers.

Metrobus is playing a key part in the city's Rea Vaya strategy to revolutionise public transport in the city. It will see the introduction of large new passenger buses along dedicated bus lanes across the city. More than 85% of Johannesburgers will be within 500 metres of the network's trunk or feeder lines. The objective is to shift up to 20% of private vehicle users to the new buses.

"The new service will present city residents with a fast, cheap, safe and reliable alternative to the use of private vehicles," says Ms Moosajee.

One of the objectives is to have a world-class public transport system in place by 2010 when Johannesburg hosts the Soccer World Cup final. "An efficient transport system will be one of the important legacies of 2010 - and Metrobus is a key player in this plan," she says.
