INNER CITY CLEANLINESS AWARENESS

Region F will start an education campaign sensitizing the community of the  Inner City about the importance of keeping Johannesburg clean.  The campaign will start on Wednesday, 1 August 2007.

The City of Johannesburg has adopted an Inner City Charter which among other things states as follows with regard to waste management:

“A key concern of a wide range of stakeholders is the lack of effective management of waste in the Inner City.  Littering, illegal dumping of waste, poor management of activities such as street trading and on-street taxi ranking, and the increase in the number of buildings with collapsing management structures, all contribute to the challenge.”

Region F’s revival is well underway, with incredible strides being made to turn the Johannesburg CBD around and reclaim its position as South Africa’s premier city.  The Greater Inner City continues to be a priority and in line with this the City of Johannesburg has developed a Charter to ensure its regeneration.

The campaign in question intends to ensure a clean, waste-free Inner City, through the development of waste management and cleaning services operating on a 24/7 basis.

“To ensure that this campaign is sustainable, we have decided that it runs for the next five years”, said Regional Director: Region F, Mr Nathi Mthethwa. Mr Mthethwa continues,  “this is what makes this campaign different from the previous ones which were conducted on ad hoc basis”.

To further ensure sustainability of this exercise we have put in place the system of urban inspection.  The urban inspectors will continuously be out in the street looking for illegal dumping and other nuisances.  These inspectors will be working hand in hand with other council departments endowed with related competencies in maintaining cleanliness of Johannesburg.  This joint initiative will make it easy to identify the hot spots and implement corrective measures without fail.

As this endeavour is long term it also aims to eradicate the breakdown of services within the Inner City.  This will be achieved by dovetailing this initiative with all other programmes aimed at uplifting standards of living, ensuring civic pride, and instilling a culture of city pride within the Inner City.

“Be on the look-out for Region F staff wearing neon suits on Wednesday and give them a chance to talk to you about reduction of waste in the city,” said Manager: Stakeholder Management and Liaison, Mr Shaun O’Shea.
