Sisonke Projects

The City of Johannesburg in partnership with Pikitup, and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has embarked on a service delivery improvement project called SISONKE (a Zulu word meaning together).

A Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Infrastructure and Services in the City of Johannesburg Council, Councillor Ross Greeff said the that words used embody all the campaign objectives, namely that we are aiming to clean up the city for 2010 and beyond.

“The pay off line for the project, “let’s clean our city together” reinforces the fact that together, through the support and commitment from our communities we can keep our city clean,” said Councillor Greeff.

The project aims to improve the lives of Joburg people by implementing three projects. These are:
·     The installation of innovative underground bins in high density
areas,
·     The Street Prefect program, and
·     A model for cleaning informal settlements on a sustainable basis.

The Sisonke project has kick started in the Inner City of Johannesburg with the first set of underground bins being installed in the Joubert Park area.

Excavation works that will be conducted between June 27th and the 30 August 2007 will have minor affect on communities in Joubert Park, Yeoville, CBD and Braamfontein, no roads will be closed during the construction period. The following sites will be excavated throughout the three month period.
