Striking new symbols to show city transport’s commitment to quality service
Johannesburg buses will soon display striking new symbols to demonstrate the city's commitment to quality service delivery in the field of public transport.
The new emblems were unveiled by Ms Rehana Moosajee, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport today and will be prominently displayed on five city buses. By July 2008 15 buses in the Metrobus fleet will sport these symbols which will also be on display at bus stops, shelters and other transport facilities.
Ms Moosajee says the five symbols will communicate positive values to both commuters and city staff members. "When the people of Johannesburg see these emblems they must associate it with quality service and a safe and enjoyable experience on our buses," says Ms Moosajee.
The five emblems depict the key values of the Johannesburg department of transport, namely:
honesty
respect
co-operation
Ubuntu and
accountability.
Ms Moosajee says consensus on these values was reached following a process of consultation with employees of the department as well as with external stakeholders such as commuter organisations and the taxi industry. "We reached agreement that these are the key values that we must aspire to in terms of service delivery.
"For the people of Johannesburg who make use of our buses the symbols will represent the essence of a quality bus service – such as punctuality, accessibility, cleanliness, friendly service and value for money," says Ms Moosajee.
For staff it serves as a reminder to keep quality delivery at the top of their agendas and to live these values by treating consumers with respect and dignity. It will also strengthen awareness of values such as work ethics, team spirit and good morale among employees.
"We want these emblems to be instantly recognisable across our city," says Ms Moosajee.
"These striking designs must guarantee a good quality of service delivery from our public transport system."
In the coming months the department will embark on an extensive campaign to popularise the new emblems among commuters and city residents. Calendars and bumper stickers depicting the symbols will be distributed at public transport facilities.
The new emblems will also be displayed prominently at construction sites for the city's new Bus Rapid Transport system, commonly known as Rea Vaya.
"Rea Vaya will provide Johannesburgers with a safe, fast and reliable alternative to private transport. It will revolutionise the way that people are being transported between destinations across our city," says Ms Moosajee.
