2009-01-13: No water contamination in the City of Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG Water (JW), the municipal owned entity responsible for water and sanitation services in the city, wishes to reassure the residents of the city and visitors that Johannesburg tap water is still safe to consume.

A hoax email is being circulated to customers across the city advising people not to drink water from the taps. This is not true as the quality of Johannesburg's tap water continues to be rated as amongst the best in the world.

To ensure that this status is maintained, our scientists routinely monitor over 500 drinking water samples per month. Tap water samples are taken from the bulk supply to reservoirs and across the city, including samples from informal settlements areas. Through this rigorous testing and monitoring process we are able to respond proactively and quickly to any possible water quality problems and ensure that the quality of every drop of the million litres of water that passes through our network daily is well within SABS Standard for Class One Drinking Water.

Customers are urged to ignore this mail or any other related correspondence as this is the work of individuals or parties trying to cause panic amongst our customers and stakeholders.  JW is well poised to meet the challenges of this growing city and we remain committed to ensuring that service levels improve continuously as we strive towards providing Johannesburg, a world class African city, with world class water and sanitation service.  This is demonstrated by the implementation of various projects towards the upgrading of water and sanitation infrastructure across the city.

As JW customer safety and satisfaction remain our top priority.
