2009-02-09: Independent team to investigate JMPD disputes

THE  City  of  Johannesburg  has  been  consistently  engaged in efforts to resolve   the   industrial   dispute   with  members  of  the  Johannesburg Metropolitan  Police  Department  (JMPD)  to  ensure  a resumption of vital services delivered to the public.

The  City  confirms  that  it had already acceded to SAMWU's demands as far back  as Wednesday (04th February 2009).  In this agreement the City agreed to  end  the  hiring  of  pensioners, to suspend three employees accused of corruption and to appoint an independent investigation into the allegations of corruption.

The  City  met  with  SAMWU  today,  Monday  9 February 2009 to discuss the union's demands in respect of the Chief of Police.

The  City  had  engaged  the  services  of  an  independent  legal  firm to investigate   various   allegations.   The   mandate   of  the  independent investigator has now been extended to include the allegations in respect of the Chief of Police.

In  the  interest of finding a solution and to ensure that services will be resumed,  in  the  interest  of the community of Johannesburg, the Chief of Police,  Mr  Chris  Ngcobo, has voluntarily recused himself from JPMD while this investigation continues.

The  City  of  Johannesburg trusts that the issues contained herein will be resolved  through  this independent investigation. JMPD employees and SAMWU members  are invited to provide the investigators with relevant information and evidence.

The  City calls on all JMPD employees currently on strike to return to work immediately and to resume their duties.

The  City  again  wishes  to extend its sincere apologies to members of the public who may have been inconvenienced because of the strike.
