2009-02-12: Bringing service delivery to the people
THE city's spotlight will be thrust on Norwood, Orange Grove and Highlands North on Wednesday evening when Johannesburg's Mayor, Amos Masondo, meets with residents of these communities at a public gathering that is open to all.
Johannesburg has outperformed all other municipalities by scooping the coveted Vuna awards in 2007 and 2008 for the best-managed Metro in the country.
But Mayor Amos Masondo refuses to rest on these morals and strongly believes the city must strive to do even better with the willing participation of its citizens.
Besides singing the praises for the City, which will become Africa's transport and soccer hub in the next 18 months, residents will be able to air their concerns over service delivery with the relevant department heads on hand to answer their questions in detail.
The meeting will be held at the Patterson Park Recreation Centre in 7th Street, Orange Grove, from 7pm.
By engaging with residents, Masondo believes the city's management can accurately gauge the pulse of the city and act in accordance, with the city residents' needs close at heart.
The Mayor will report on the progress the city has made in the past few years while sharing its plans to propel this modern city into the next decade, 2010 and beyond.
The pressing needs of today's growing city will be high on the mayor's agenda.
These include strides made and challenges posed in key areas such as: economic growth, health services, housing, the environment, city management and HIV and AIDS.
To ensure a thriving democracy, residents are urged to attend the meeting and claim their stake in the future of Johannesburg by allowing their voices to be heard and their questions answered
