2009-04-01: Johannesburg Water continues to excel in service delivery

JOHANNESBURG Water (JW), the Municipal Owned Entity responsible for water and sanitation services in the city, was recently recognized at the 8th annual Metropolitan Oliver Empowerment Awards ceremony, South Africa’s foremost Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) awards held at the Sandton Convention Centre. JW received an award as a Top Empowered Transforming Municipal Owned Entity for its efforts towards the development of BEE and employment equity.

This award, the fourth in just eight months for JW, follows hot on the heels of recent recognition by the Department of Public Works at the Expanded Public Works Programme Kamoso Awards with an award in recognition of valuable contribution towards the creation of employment opportunities. In the past JW also received accolades for the following:

The Best Infrastructure Maintenance Award at the Kamoso Awards in the national category
Recognition by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry for valuable contribution towards water conservation and water demand management in the domestic sector.
Isigidi Award at the biennal Water Institute of Southern Africa Conference for its Olifantsvlei Treatment Works as the best managed large facility in the country.
The Wilson Award in 2004 for its Driefontein Wastewater Treatment works as the best operated treatment works in the country in the small to medium category.
Through South African Local Government Association benchmarking process, won the award for the best performing metro, as well as for having the best management information for both 2005/06 and 2006/07 financial year.
In addition, numerous projects have been implemented towards water conservation and water demand management over the past years such as replacement of domestic meters based on age, installation of bulk reservoirs meters, establishment of the integrity of water zones, installation of bulk zone meters, leak detection in direct feed areas and implementation of Water Warriors-a public education campaign aimed at raising awareness about water conservation.

Over the next five years JW will be spending about R1 billion every year to do away with backlogs on the upgrading and rehabilitation of infrastructure to ensure that occurrences of water bursts are eliminated.

Johannesburg Water is encouraged by these awards and recognitions in water and sanitation field and remains committed to improving the level of water and sanitation services across the City of Johannesburg, a world class African city.
