2009-04-24: Removal of election posters

Now that elections are over, the City of Johannesburg would like to remind all participating parties to remove their campaigning posters as soon as possible.

In terms of a mayoral committee resolution, read with the City's Outdoor Advertising Bylaws parties have up to ten days after the elections to remove posters.

Posters that still remain on display and have not been removed by the relevant political party within the mentioned ten days will be regarded as being in contravention of the said bylaws. The City at a prescribed fee will remove these within another ten days of the expiry of the first ten days. The cost of such removal will be borne by the responsible party.

Areas to be targeted for the removal of the notices are trees, traffic lights and Council assets.

A letter stipulating the conditions for the display of posters was sent to the IEC and all political parties contesting the elections. Once again, the City reinforces the importance of removing election posters in compliance with its bylaws.

This not only contributes to general cleanliness of the City but frees up advertising space as well.
