2009-06-17: iTransie 2 Ellispark is now free
JOHANNESBURG, 17 June 2009 The first iTransie 2 Ellispark was in the main successfully run for the opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup on Sunday 14 June 2009. All fans were transported within FIFA set periods so that they could watch South Africa and Iraq play a spectacular game.
We would like to thank all Joburg residents who were supportive of the Park and Rides. Approximately 5817 cars parked in all the facilities in total leading to an estimated over 20 000 spectators who were then ferried to the stadium via iTransie Park and Rides.
Within one and a half hours, 90% of the cars were out of the Park and Ride facilities. However, there were some challenges experienced particularly at the Wits Park and Ride facility and the City has responded by putting a number pro-active measures in place.
"In consultation with FIFA and the LOC we have decided to make the Park and Rides free," says Sibongile Mazibuko head of 2010. This should make entry into the Park and Rides speedier and reduce congestion at the entrances.
"We also urge fans to make use of the Bez Valley, Nasrec and the Dome Park n Rides. Over 51% of the total vehicles of all Park and Rides went to the Wits facility."
Other measures which have been put in place include;
Increased deployment of SAPS to improve crowd control particularly at iTransie Park and Rides and Pickup points
More private security to ensure safety of vehicles and people at the Park and Rides
Detailed briefs of volunteers to provide better assistance
Further engagement with the fleet managers to ensure that drivers drop off at the correct place.
Deployment of volunteers to Ellis Park Precinct to direct crowds to iTransie pick up points
Distribution of leaflets at the Park and Rides with maps of the stadium detailing the location of the Park and Ride pickup points, in relation to the stadium.
More signage, greater information and the use of radio updates on the news during the game day will help to ensure that the iTransie is a pleasurable experience for all fans and that the process runs smoothly.
The City asks that spectators to please be patient when queuing for the park and rides as due to the large numbers of fans this may take longer than expected, particularly when returning from the game. However the City will ensure that all fans are successfully transported back to the Park and Ride facilities.
"It is important that the fans queue in an orderly fashion as this helps the loading process to work more efficiently. It becomes an issue when fans do not wait their turn and try to push to get onto vehicles. There are enough iTransie vehicles for everyone and we will make sure that no one gets left behind." explains Yolisa Mashilwane Director: Management Support Transportation Department
