2009-07-24: City prepares for the national municipal strike action

The  strike  by  municipal employees that is due to start on Monday 27 July
2009  is a national one, as such the City of Johannesburg, working together with  the  South  African Local Government Association (SALGA), are putting together  contingency  plans  to militate against the effects of the strike action  by  members  of  the  South African Municipal Union (SAMWU) and the Independent Municipal Trade Union (IMATU) jointly.

Notwithstanding  the  fact  that   this is a national strike, the City will
make  every  effort to ensure that there will be minimal or no interruption to public services.

The  City  of  Johannesburg supports the right of workers to exercise their rights  as enshrined in our country’s Constitution and the Labour Relations Act.  However,  in  the exercise of this fundamental right, it expects both unions  to ensure that those involved in the strike, respect and uphold the rights of those that have elected not to strike and in particular essential services  personnel.

In  this  regard the City calls on the leadership and members  of  both  unions  to  refrain  from  any  act  of  intimidation or lawlessness whilst exercising their right to strike.

In   cases  where  service  backlog  problems  are  experienced,  necessary
arrangements  will  be  made  to catch up and residents are urged to report service problems at our Call Centre on 011 375-5555.
