2009-08-07: Johannesburg to study a report on Chief of Police
THE City of Johannesburg, today received the report on investigations conducted against the Chief of Police, Mr Chris Ngobo.
The report was presented this morning by the investigator to a delegation consisting of the City Manager and other senior managers together with the leadership of the Unions.
Mr Ngcobo stepped aside voluntarily from his position six months ago to facilitate for the a smooth process of investigation. The City then announced that an independent law firm was appointed to investigate allegations of corruption levelled against Mr Ngcobo.
JMPD officials and their union, the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU), claimed at that time that they had sufficient evidence of corruption and mismanagement involving Mr Ngcobo and of incidents that allegedly took place during his tenure as the head of the City Police.
Mr Ngcobo voluntarily relinquished his position on 9 February 2009. At the time the City called on all interested parties to provide evidence and proof of the allegations against Mr Ngcobo to enable the investigation to be completed within a three month period.
The City of Johannesburg is pleased that the investigation has been concluded. This will go a long way to putting this matter to rest and to restore permanent leadership at JMPD for a strategic direction.
The City Manager will study the report with the aim of making recommendations to the City’s leadership. A comprehensive statement will be issued once the content of the report and its recommendations have been studied.
