2009-09-04: Launch of the Bram Fischer Multi-purpose Centre

Stuggle hero Bram Fischer will be honoured at the launch of an impressive Multi-purpose Centre in Bram Fischerville, Soweto, on Sunday 6 September 2009

The new complex brings together a host of community facilites, including a hall with public artwork in honour of Bram Fischer, a creche, two soccer fields, basketball court as well as other sports facilities. These facilities were developed to address the IDP requests  coming from the Community. A satellite library was incorporated into the multipurpose sport hall.

This project provides a one stop shop for all core Community Development functions. Having all functions under roof, helps reduce operating costs.

The Bram Fischer Multi-Purpose Hall will be officially opened by the Executive Mayor, Clr Amos Masondo, assisted by family, past-friends and comrades of Bram Fischer. Speakers will include Bran Fischer's daughter, IIse Wilson, veteren human rights lawyer George Bizos, and academic and former political prisoner Raymond Suttner.

At the entrance to the multi-Purpose hall, artists Hermann Niebuhr and Jabulani Zwane produced a series of murals illustrating the life and struggles of Bram Fisher. Fisher is shown as an Afrikaner, a family man, a lawyer, an activist and revolutionary, and a political prisoner.

The artwork highlights Bramm Fischer's role as a lawyer of conscience who was sentenced to life imprionsment for his political convictions
