2009-09-15: Official re-naming of Vincent Road to Reverend Frederic Modise Drive

THE Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Councillor Amos Masondo honoured the late Reverend Frederick S. Modise by re-naming Vincent Road in Meadowlands, Soweto, after him on Monday, 14 September 2009.

Reflecting the biblical tale of Jesus, the late Reverend Frederick S. Modise, who humbly began his career as a carpenter from Sofia Town, became the founder of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC).

He pioneered what has become today, one of the fastest growing churches in Southern Africa – a beacon of hope, a centre charity and healing.

This happened in September 1962 when he received divine healing and also a calling to start a ministry that extended his gift of healing to other people.

The City of Joburg opted to honour the contribution the church is making in welfare and job creation projects in the township and to recognise the strong emphasis the church places on issues of morality.

The city does not take decisions on the naming and renaming of streets or public spaces lightly.

Through the years, the city has developed a policy on naming and renaming that is the product of extensive consultation.  In this instance the city received submissions from the church with detailed motivation explaining why the founder of the church should be so honoured.

This was then subjected to a public participation process and eventually got approved by Council earlier this year.
