2009-09-15: Safety is a collective responsibility

THE City of Johannesburg reaffirms its commitment to creating a clean, safe city in which all its citizens and visitors can live, work and play.

Member of the mayoral committee for Public Safety Councillor Elgina Ndhlovu says, "Safety is a collective responsibility and we must all work together to reduce crime and prevent incidents; we have just launched September as safety awareness month but this is actually the beginning of a continuous action and awareness period heading towards the festive season".

She said that the City's metro police together with SAPS, community policing forums and private security would be on high alert for criminal activity throughout the City Of Joburg.

Continuing she says, "By regularly carrying out these safety campaigns, we hope to instill a heightened sense of awareness amongst the community".

She said that people should not learn safety by accident but remain alert and behave responsibly be it at a shopping mall, at home or on the roads.

"I am making a plea to parents to particularly know where and with whom their children are, especially now that swimming pools are open" says Ndhlovu.

Acting Chief of Police David Tembe says, "Our job as metro police and SAPS is not only law enforcement but to serve and protect people from all forms of crime; community co-operation is vital for our efforts to succeed so residents should work with the police to make the City a safer place".

He said that they would be having joint operations; roadblocks, vehicle searches and roadworthiness checks, body searches, breathalyzer tests and random building checks for bylaw contraventions.

If possible whenever an unsafe situation arises, immediately seek help or call:

SAPS on 10111
JMPD and emergencies on 375 5911 or 10177
Joburg Connect on 375 5555 to report open manholes, fallen electricity cables and trees, water bursts, flooding, faulty robots and vandalism.
"Building a city where life, property and lifestyles are safe and secure through a visible and effective response to crime, emergencies and traffic regulation"
