2009-10-16: Car Free Day 20 October
THE City of Johannesburg will be joining the rest of the country in celebrating Car Free Day on 20 October 2009.
Residents of Johannesburg are encouraged to take part in the celebration by using public transport or joining lift clubs. Phase 1A of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system, which is safe, fast and affordable, is operating in full swing. Currently there are 40 buses running between Ellis Park in the Johannesburg inner city to Thokoza Park in Soweto.
The focus of this year’s transport month celebrations revolves around the promotion of public transport and educating people about transport and safety issues and the impact on traffic congestion on the environment.
The theme for transport month this year is “Safety in all modes of transport: system readiness for 2010”. With the introduction of the Rea Vaya BRT system, the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Amos Masondo said that public transportation in the City of Johannesburg will never be the same again.
The City invites all residents of Johannesburg to use public transport and contribute in the reduction of car emissions thereby saving the environment.
