2009-10-21: Johannesburg tops rankings for basic services in Empowerdex survey
JOHANNESBURG scored the highest rating for the delivery of basic services - water, sanitation and electricity – in the annual Empowerdex survey.
In each of these categories the city has received a mark of more than 90 out of 100. On the overall ranking it is placed second among the six metros in the country and only marginally behind Cape Town.
The Empowerdex survey assesses the extent of delivery of basic services by all local and metropolitan municipalities as well as progress in delivery over a period of time. It is done on the basis of data obtained from Statistics SA.
The survey confirms the findings of the City's own annual customer surveys which indicate a steady growth in satisfaction about the quality of service delivery among residents between 2006 and 2009.
It is also reflected in the City's medium term budget where City Power receives 41% and Joburg Water 34% of the total capital budget of R3, 5 billion. The City is well on its way to meet its objective to eliminate the current water and sanitation backlog by 2010.
In addition to the Empowerdex report Johannesburg's achievements in service delivery has also been recognised by other independent surveys including the national Vuna Award for the best managed metro in the country two years in a row (2007/2008).
