2009-11-30:40 JMPD offices allocated to Rea Vaya BRT
The City of Johannesburg is pleased to announce that from the 20th November, 40 JMPD officers have been allocated to the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system to improve the safety of both bus passenger, pedestrians and commuters who interact with the Rea Vaya.
These officers will patrol the stations, dedicated lanes and board the buses.
Their key tasks will include:
Pedestrian safety making sure that pedestrians, especially children, do not walk in the dedicated lanes
Supporting the private security in Rea Vaya stations to safeguard the safety of passengers especially at night in the Joburg Central Business District.
Ensure that the Rea Vaya buses can move speedily through sections which are still under construction such as Nasrec where a new station is being constructed on top of the motorway
Take action against the use of the dedicated Rea Vaya BRT lanes by other
Pointmen duty at busy intersections with the Rea Vaya where they have been are usually reported incidents of accidents between motorists and Rea Vaya buses.
The team of officers will also address other issues such as fare evasion, safety in the buses and the enforcement of the city’s by-laws.
This is another step that the City is taking to put in place measures to ensure that the Rea Vaya BRT buses provide a safe, fast and reliable public transport system, and ensure a safe and secure 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.
