Christmas for the animals at Johannesburg Zoo

CHRISTMAS: a time of festivities, excitement and good food. Not only for people, but for the animals at the Zoo as well. However, their presents are slightly different. They receive food or smelly treats.

The Zoo animals enjoy a well-balanced, nutritious diet, determined scientifically to address their needs such as strong bones, a healthy coat and a good digestive system. For health purposes, their weight should be maintained remembering that they may not experience the same level of exercise they would have if they had to fend for themselves. Animals that are over or under-weight face different health problems and good dental care are another element to consider which is why treats are not often dispensed to our animals. But it is Xmas!

Our treats form part of animal behavior enrichment programme in the Zoo managed by Tshepang Makganye, Executive Manager Animal Department. These programmes are designed to extend their foraging times as it intends to stimulate their natural behaviour.  We have put together an enrichment programme for you to participate in and to take some exciting photographs of how the animals enjoy their special treats.
