2010-01-13: Public participation process for Gautrain feeder and distribution routes and services

THE commencement date of the first phase of the Gautrain system is due in June 2010. A critical component of the system is the feeder and distribution buses to transport commuters to and from the stations.

Part of the Bombela Concession Company's (BCC) obligation is to provide the buses as well as determine the routes, the timetables and the stops.

In 2009 the City of Johannesburg together with Gauteng Province represented by Gautrain Management Agency (GMA), undertook a study of reviewing the routes for the Gautrain Dedicated Feeder and Distribution Service (GDFDS) which was initially proposed in 2004.

"We initiated this review to ensure that there is maximum integration between the different bus modes as well as between buses and mini-bus taxis", said the City of Joburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Rehana Moosajee.

"The review was able to take into account the Rea Vaya BRT and the new proposed routes ensure that there is no duplication and overlap.  The new
routes also ensure that the mini-bus taxi industry have a role to play in transporting commuters to Gautrain stations on certain routes", she added.

While there is no legal obligation to seek public comment on these revised routes, the Mayoral Committee agreed that due to the significance of these revisions, the public including commuters and public transport operators should be given an opportunity to comment before they are finalised.

The proposed feeder and distribution routes and services were initially announced on two national news papers (The Star and Sowetan) on the 30th November 2009, closing on the 31st December 2009.

The City of Johannesburg has however received feedback from members of the public who would have liked to comment but could not do so due to the holiday period.

"We have thus consulted with the Gautrain Management Agency and Bombela Concession Company and have agreed to extend the time for public participation until the 12th February 2010", announced MMC Moosajee.

"We apologize for any inconvenience caused", she added.
